Ceramides and tremella both show up in hydrating, plumping routines, but they work at different points in the same problem. What ceramides do

Ceramides are the dominant lipid in the skin's outer barrier, made by the skin to hold the wall together and keep water in, as Cleveland Clinic's overview of what ceramides do describes. Their job is sealing and structural repair, not attracting water — they are the occlusive-and-repair half of hydration. Without them, water that a humectant like tremella binds at the surface leaks straight back out, which is why hydration-only routines can feel great for an hour and tight by afternoon.
